A Delicate Task
As the intermediary at your reception, the Master of Ceremonies, or ‘MC’, has a busy time ahead of them.

They need to liaise with your wedding professionals, be prepared for anything, and ensure that an appropriate and enjoyable atmosphere is created, while still carrying out their own duties with calm and friendly assurance.

This is not an easy task. When choosing the MC, make sure that they’re aware of the amount of preparation required to fulfil the role successfully. Ideally, your MC should be an extrovert who is comfortable speaking in front of an audience. If they don’t like public speaking but have their heart set on performing the role, you might suggest they attend one of the excellent Toastmasters courses.

The MC's duties include welcoming your guests and introducing you, the newly wedded couple. At the appropriate time, the MC introduces the speakers, all of whom have been properly prepared by meeting with the MC prior to the event. Many MC’s are able to assist by providing speakers with sample speeches.

Orchestrating the Event
It is also the MC’s role to orchestrate the cutting of the cake, followed by the bridal waltz. They will then prompt your guests to join you on the dance floor. Later, they will arrange for the traditional throwing of the bouquet, the catching of the garter, the farewell circle and the guard of honour.

The MC then brings the event to its natural conclusion as you exit the room and prepare to leave in your ‘get away’ car. If necessary, some MC’s will also ensure that your luggage has been safely deposited in the boot. After your departure, your MC will close the reception by gathering everyone together once more to wish them farewell.
